YA Summit to Return to Prescott

By Donna Boyce

After a very successful, educational, and entertaining inaugural YA Summit at the end of January in 2017 it was decided to skip 2018 and offer another phenomenal experience in 2019. This next summit’s theme is “Minds Expand” and the committee has already begun planning. The 2019 YA Summit will be held from January 31 to February 2, 2019, at the Prescott Resort and Conference Center. Although a Scavenger Hunt in downtown Prescott will again be included (bring warm clothing!) there is a new format being considered for time with the authors. A common remark after the 2017 Summit was that the librarians did not have ample opportunity to hear from and mingle with the authors. A panel presentation followed by a question and answer session will allow for more contact and communication with the writers. Also, given the abundance of quality authors who live in Arizona, the committee will be inviting more than a dozen of them to participate.

In addition to hearing about the new books released, there will be hands on workshop sessions, and baskets of goodies for raffles.

As part of the AzLA Annual Conference in Mesa in October, there will be a session entitled “Pre-Summit Party” to publicize the event and encourage people to apply for sponsored registration. Activities, information and food will be provided!

The Summit provides a unique venue in which to learn from fellow librarians who interact primarily with teens about what has worked, what hasn’t, and what might be tried in the future. “Minds Expand” is open to public librarians and teacher librarians from public and private schools. In 2017, there was a balance between the school and non-school librarians, and attendees expressed an appreciation for hearing from and working with each other and becoming more acquainted with the similarities and differences in their jobs.
