Published in 1623, the First Folio is the first collected edition of Shakespeare’s plays, and only 233 copies are known today. Next year, to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, the Folger Shakespeare Library is sending a First Folio to every state in the United States.
The University of Arizona has been selected as the Arizona host site through an application coordinated by the UA Libraries and the Arizona State Museum, and in collaboration with numerous other campus and statewide partners. From February 15 – March 15, 2016, the Tucson community will have the opportunity to experience the First Folio in person.
The First Folio will be opened to the most quoted line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “to be or not to be.” A multi-panel exhibition exploring Shakespeare’s impact, then and now, will be accompanied by digital content and interactive activities. Additional programming is being developed and will be shared as it is available.
